As the fog rolled in over Vestrahorn mountain, softening the jagged peaks into something almost dreamlike, Hannah and Tyler stood on the black sand beach at Stokksnes and said their vows. The ocean behind them, the mountains disappearing into the mist ahead, and just the three of us – quiet, present, and completely in it for a foggy, magical Stokksnes elopement.
It was exactly the kind of moment you’d want to bottle up and set on a shelf to open later.
Which, as it turns out, is exactly how Hannah and Tyler approach their relationship.

Hannah and Tyler met at a bar on the 4th of July in Side Lake, Minnesota – Hannah’s hometown. They’d actually gone to the same high school, but with three grades between them they’d never really crossed paths. That night though, they talked for hours. Hannah went home and waited (not so patiently, she’ll tell you) for Tyler to text. By morning she’d already messaged him asking to grab lunch. He said yes. The rest, as they say, is history.
When it came time to plan their wedding, a traditional celebration never really felt like them. They’d always talked about wanting to bottle up their quiet, private moments together – their little love bubble, just the two of them. And since they love to travel, Iceland felt like the only answer.
Here’s the thing about elopements (especially a Stokksnes elopement in Iceland): they never go exactly according to plan. And somehow, they always go exactly as they should.
Hannah and Tyler flew into Reykjavik to begin their Iceland adventure – and their bags didn’t make it with them. Despite Hannah specifically asking the gate agent to ensure they’d arrive, their luggage ended up somewhere else entirely. Hannah’s dress had made it but Tyler’s suit had not.
So they did what you do when Iceland hands you an unexpected gift: they spent an extra day in Reykjavik. Thankfully, their bags arrived the next morning, Tyler had his suit, and they set off toward the southeast with the whole elopement still ahead of them.
It was a stressful start that turned into one of those stories you end up grateful for.

Their elopement day began at Hotel Jökulsárlón – a grass-roofed property just a short drive to the glacier lagoon with an outdoor sauna and the kind of cozy, unhurried atmosphere that makes you want to stay forever. Hannah and Tyler got ready separately, taking their time with the quiet of the morning, soaking in every moment before they’d see each other again.
Hannah wore a flowy, minimalist Grace Loves Lace gown – effortlessly beautiful and exactly right for a day spent on black sand beaches and glacier shores. The kind of dress that moves with the wind and photographs like a dream.
When they finally saw each other for their first look, there were so many tears shed – it was truly one of the sweetest moments & I will never get over how perfect it was!
After their first look, they sat down together for lunch at the hotel – and this, Hannah told me afterward, was their favorite moment of the entire day.
Just the two of them, finally together, sitting by a beautiful window overlooking Iceland’s magical landscape, laughing and eating and being completely present with each other before the adventure began. It wasn’t planned – it was just a moment that happened because they let it – and it became one of their favorites from the whole day.
That’s what happens when you build a day around being present rather than getting through a checklist.

From the hotel, we made our way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon – and the stillness of it is something that’s hard to fully describe. The water impossibly blue and calm, ancient icebergs drifting slowly across the surface, everything quiet in a way that feels almost sacred. Hannah and Tyler soaked in every beautiful view as we explored the shoreline, taking it in slowly, laughing, completely unhurried in the way only the two of them can be.

On the way to Stokksnes, we stopped at the visitor center and spontaneously decided that the pie they had to offer was also going to be a part of their elopement story. They shared a slice of their impromptu wedding cake at one of the cozy tables in the visitor center and it was so perfectly them.
When we made it to the black sand beach, they’d planned their ceremony around the sunset – and as if on cue, the fog had other ideas. It rolled in over Vestrahorn, swallowing the golden light entirely, wrapping everything in this quiet, cinematic haze that made the whole scene feel like something out of a dream. Hannah and Tyler stood together on the beach and said their vows as the world softened and disappeared around them.
And somehow it was more beautiful than anything we could have planned.
Their ceremony was full of emotion from start to finish – that easy, unhurried quality they carry everywhere, this sense of two people completely at home with each other, carried into every laugh, every tear, and every quiet moment they shared.

Hannah and Tyler’s day is a perfect reminder of what’s possible when you let go of what an elopement is supposed to look like. The lost bags became part of the story. The unplanned lunch became the favorite memory. The fog that rolled in during the vows made everything more beautiful, not less.
If you’re dreaming of a Stokksnes elopement – or anywhere in Iceland – I’d love to help you create a day that feels just as real, just as you, and just as full of the moments you’ll want to bottle up forever.
