If you’re dreaming of exchanging vows in a place that feels like another planet—think black sand beaches, towering waterfalls, mossy canyons, and glacier-carved landscapes—then an Iceland elopement might just be the perfect fit for you.
As a photographer who has traveled to Iceland multiple times and photographed couples all along the South Coast, I can confidently say this: Iceland is one of the most awe-inspiring places in the world to elope. Whether you’re after a moody, misty adventure or a sun-soaked summer evening beneath the midnight sun, Iceland delivers beauty in every direction—and I’m here to guide you to the best of it.
Let’s dive into the best places to elope in Iceland, organized by region and accessibility so you can find the one that fits your dream day.
The South Coast is where most elopement couples head for a reason—it’s easily accessible from Reykjavík and packed with otherworldly beauty. This region is perfect for couples who want a mix of jaw-dropping waterfalls, black sand beaches, and epic cliffs, all within a few hours’ drive.
A massive waterfall that’s especially magical in the early morning or during golden hour. You can get up close for intimate portraits or climb the stairs to capture sweeping views from above. It’s one of the most popular elopement locations in Iceland, and for good reason. If you’re worried about it being busy, the crowds usually come in waves—so with a little patience, you can usually find a few minutes of solitude to soak it all in.
Want to get married behind a waterfall? This one’s for you. Seljalandsfoss offers a one-of-a-kind experience—you can actually walk behind the falls for a magical, immersive ceremony spot that feels like something out of a fairytale. The thundering water, the soft mist, the echo of your vows bouncing off the canyon walls—it’s unforgettable. It’s also an easy stop right off the Ring Road, making it a perfect addition to your elopement day itinerary. Just bring a rain jacket and prepare to get a little misty (literally and emotionally).
This dramatic coastline with basalt columns, sea stacks, and crashing waves offers a moody, cinematic backdrop for your Iceland elopement. Be aware of sneaker waves and time your visit carefully—it’s stunning but can be dangerous if you’re not cautious. It’s also incredibly busy here, especially around the basalt columns. It can be difficult (and maybe impossible) to get that area to yourself, so keep that in mind. While it’s not an ideal ceremony spot due to crowds, it’s still a fun and iconic photo opportunity. If you walk further down the beach, though, you’ll often find more privacy—making it a better option for exchanging vows.
Just around the corner from Skógafoss but far less crowded, Kvernufoss is one of my favorite hidden gems. It also has a path that leads behind the falls, surrounded by moss-covered cliffs and a peaceful, tucked-away vibe. If you’re looking for something a little less well-known, but still easily accessible from Reykjavik, Kvernufoss is perfect!
This viewpoint offers panoramic views of black sand beaches, the sea arch, and even puffins during the right season. It’s a great spot for sunrise ceremonies or portraits with iconic Icelandic scenery.
If you’re willing to venture further east, the reward is a quieter and more surreal experience. This part of Iceland feels vast, wild, and untouched.
Imagine icebergs floating by as you say your vows. The blues here are unreal, and the peaceful energy of this place makes it one of the most unforgettable spots to elope in Iceland. It’s maybe my favorite spot along the South Coast for its easy accessibility and insanely beautiful and unique views. It also can be really quiet and lowkey—if you know where to go.
Right across from Jökulsárlón, this black sand beach is littered with glistening ice chunks that have washed ashore from the lagoon. It’s an ethereal spot for sunrise portraits or a dreamy post-ceremony walk.
With dramatic Vestrahorn mountain rising behind a black sand dune field, Stokksnes looks like something out of a fantasy film. It’s private, surreal, and perfect for couples who want something off the beaten path.
The Highlands are only accessible during summer months (generally mid-June to early September), but they’re worth the effort. These remote areas feel untouched and untamed.
Colorful rhyolite mountains, geothermal hot springs, and lava fields come together in this otherworldly landscape. It’s ideal for hiking elopements or multi-day adventures if you want to truly disconnect.
A stunning mossy canyon you can walk into, surrounded by towering cliffs. It feels secret and sacred—perfect for couples looking for a quiet, enchanted vibe.
For a winter elopement, consider a guided trip to the Katla Ice Cave. These blue-toned caves beneath a glacier are absolutely surreal. You’ll need a guide and special gear, but the result is worth it.
Fewer tourists make it out east, but the region is full of cinematic canyons and waterfalls that feel like they’re straight out of a dream.
This basalt column canyon has exploded in popularity thanks to its unique formation and teal river. It’s especially photogenic in early summer and offers a peaceful vibe away from the crowds.
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in East Iceland, Rjúkandi flows elegantly down a layered cliff face. It’s easy to access and ideal for a relaxed, scenic ceremony.
Tucked away in the fjords, Klifbrekku is tiered, remote, and stunningly peaceful. If you’re craving solitude and sweeping views, this one’s a gem.
This region is sometimes called “Iceland in miniature” because it has a bit of everything—lava fields, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and cute fishing villages.
This iconic black church is a favorite for couples wanting a touch of tradition with a wild landscape. It’s surrounded by lava fields and ocean views—a perfect mix of elegance and adventure.
With the famously photogenic Kirkjufell mountain in the background, this is one of the most photographed spots in Iceland. It’s best for sunrise or sunset, especially if you want those postcard-perfect vibes.
I’ve been to Iceland multiple times, explored it in every kind of weather, and photographed love stories in so many of the spots listed above. I’ve driven the South Coast, hiked to waterfalls, waited for the light to hit just right, and learned how to handle the ever-changing Icelandic weather.
What does that mean for you? It means I can help you pick the perfect location based on the season, time of day, lighting, crowds, and even weather forecasts. I’ll help you craft a timeline that leaves space for spontaneity, find local vendors that match your vibe, and keep everything feeling easy and fun along the way.
