Some days just feel like magic from the very beginning—and Sidney & Aaron’s sunrise elopement in the San Juan Mountains was exactly that kind of day. The kind where everything aligns: the softest sunrise light, heartfelt vows, spontaneous joy, and even a surprise encounter that felt like it was written in the stars.
If you’re dreaming of an adventurous Colorado elopement that blends mountain views with deeply personal moments, this intimate sunrise elopement in the San Juan Mountains is for you.
We started the day long before the sun did. At 2 AM, headlights lit the way as we bounced up a rugged, cliffside road—one of those classic San Juan mountain passes that leaves your heart racing and your jaw dropping. The stars overhead felt close enough to touch as we made our way to one of the most breathtaking sunrise spots in all of Colorado.
Once we reached the top, Sidney and Aaron got ready together on the mountaintop. The wind was gentle, the light just beginning to peek over the ridgelines. As the sun rose and lit up the peaks around us in warm golden light, they exchanged vows—just the two of them, surrounded by nothing but mountains and sky. It was filled with quiet joy, tears, and so much tenderness. You could feel how deeply these two love each other.
We stayed up there for a while, soaking in the warmth of the morning sun and the magic of what had just unfolded.
After the sunrise, we made our way back down the mountain and over to one of my favorite hidden spots in the San Juans. A peaceful meadow, an alpine lake, and dramatic mountain views created the perfect scene to keep the celebration going.
Sidney and Aaron wandered through the meadow, hand in hand. We paused to admire the lake, take in the views, and then—because every elopement needs a little fun—they pulled out a shotski to toast to the day. It was playful, carefree, and completely them.
One of my all time favorite locations for couples to stay for their elopement is The Wyman Hotel in Silverton. It has the prettiest locations for photos around their common areas, including the bar, and the prettiest little bookshelf in the hallway! It’s cozy & beautiful, and absolutely perfect if you’re inviting guests too as you can rent out their outdoor space for a reception!
By late morning, we returned to the historic Wyman Hotel in Silverton to meet up with their family. This cozy, charming spot added a touch of history to the day as we took portraits and shared some slow moments together.
From there, we all drove out to another scenic overlook nearby for family photos. The mountains stretched endlessly behind us as their loved ones gathered close, bringing so much warmth and love into the afternoon.
As we wrapped up and started walking back to the cars, something unexpected happened—one of those moments that feels like it was meant to be.
A man appeared holding the reins of two horses.
Sidney’s mom asked if they could ride, and he happily said yes. Just like that, the day got even more magical.
Sidney, who grew up riding, climbed up onto one of the horses and rode through a mountain meadow, her wedding dress flowing behind her. The look on her face said everything—it was joy, nostalgia, wonder. It was a moment no one planned for, and yet somehow, it felt like it belonged exactly where it landed.
Kismet moments like this are what make elopements so unforgettable. There’s room for spontaneity, space to breathe, and freedom to just be. Sidney and Aaron radiated so much love, light, and joy throughout their day—it was an absolute honor to witness.
Whether you’re envisioning a sunrise Jeep adventure, a peaceful meadow ceremony, or something entirely your own, the San Juan Mountains are full of hidden gems waiting to be explored. I’d love to help you plan a day that reflects your love and your story.
